With the "Alert", the watchman inserts the station key into the clock and then turns a crank that presses the key directly against the dial and the die
and thereby embosses the station number into the dial. This concept was always more expensive to manufacture, but with a steel key and elimination of any 'grinding' by the watchman's turning of the key, it gave
